Thrive Refuge: Concert for Peace – A Night of Music, Hope, and Solidarity
In 2022, Sasha Luchkov, a Ukrainian refugee, found solace and opportunity in Canada through Thrive Refuge’s Refugee Support Program. Now a student at the UBC School of Music, Sasha’s journey came full circle as he sought to give back to the community that welcomed him. With the vision of using music as a unifying force, he hosted “Concert for Peace”, a fundraising event supporting the Immigrant Services Society of British Columbia (ISSofBC). This concert was not only a celebration of resilience but also a beacon of hope for those beginning anew in a foreign land.
A Welcome Through Music: Inviting 50 Newcomer Refugees
With the support of ISSofBC, Thrive Refuge invited 50 newcomer refugees from South America, Asia, and Africa to attend the concert. For many, this was their first time experiencing a live music performance, marking a significant and emotional milestone in their journey to a new life in Canada. Beyond entertainment, the event was designed to provide a warm and meaningful welcome, fostering a sense of belonging within their new community.
The Power of Art in Times of Division
In a world where polarization and displacement continue to grow, Thrive Refuge recognizes that art serves as a bridge when words fall short. Music and creative expression transcend language barriers, offering a universal medium through which untold stories can be shared. For refugees, art is more than a pastime—it is a means of survival, a source of healing, and a way to reclaim identity amidst adversity.
Installation for Peace: A Living Tribute to Humanity
For this event, Isabelle Wang (Co-founder and Creative Director) conceptualized the "Installation for Peace"—a symbolic, interactive art piece. With a $10 donation, attendees could place a rose within the installation, contributing to a collective statement of unity and compassion. All proceeds were directed toward the Thrive Refuge Music and Fine Arts Bursary, administered through ISSofBC, ensuring that refugees with artistic aspirations receive the support they need to pursue their passions.
A Cause Endorsed by Leaders
The mission of Thrive Refuge has garnered the support of Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations, Hon. Richard Arbeiter, who shared his personal connection to the refugee experience:
“As someone whose family were refugees, I am an example as to why we must provide equal opportunities for everyone.”— Hon. Richard Arbeiter
Further reinforcing the event’s significance, Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Bob Rae, underscored the staggering scale of global displacement:
“We have over one hundred and ten million people who have been forcibly displaced by crises around the world. If refugee land was a country, it would be the twelfth biggest country in the world.”— Bob Rae
A Lasting Impact
The Thrive Refuge Concert for Peace was more than a musical performance; it was a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of community-driven action. By blending art, advocacy, and direct support, the event laid the foundation for a legacy of inclusion and empowerment. As Thrive Refuge continues its mission, this concert stands as a reminder that, even in times of division, music and compassion can light the path toward peace.
